Toyota Hilux on Eyjafallajökull volcano

This is the Toyota Hilux pick-up truck pictured on Iceland’s Eyjafallajökull volcano just hours before its eruption brought chaos to the skies of the world.

According to Toyota, its legendary truck (their words, not ours) proved the ideal mode of transport for scientists “racing to set up monitoring equipment before the long-dormant mountain blew its top and sent a vast cloud of ash 30,000 feet into the sky”.

Why do we care? Well, apart from the fact this story is connected to the volcanic explosion that brought the world to a standstill (we exaggerate), the pictures that have come from what sounds like thee last journey to the mouth of the volcano before it exploded are absolutely sensational.

And given the crap time Toyota has been through lately, it’s nice to see the Japanese marque in the news for something other than stick brakes and unreliable motors.
